The Saupe is a species of fish belonging to the family Sparidae, common in the Mediterranean. It is the only species of the genus Sarpa. The adult measures on average 35 cm and can reach 50 cm. The body is oval and compressed laterally. It has silvery reflections and is streaked by 10-12 sharp yellow longitudinal lines that go from the head, rather short, to the caudal fin. The small mouth has a very prominent denture. The golden eye is quite large and close to the mouth, the back is yellow grey to greenish with gold reflections, the fins are greyish.
