Pteris cretica ‘Albo-Lineata’, or the Cretan Brake Fern, is a large sized fern that can grow up to 20” high and 20” wide at maturity. Also called the Silver Ribbon Fern, this is one of our ferns with the most beautiful ornamental foliage that has a cream-white center and bold green outline. Being an evergreen fern species of the Pteridaceae family, it is widespread from Europe, Asia and Africa. It is moderate to fairly fast growing, and the tallest stems of this fern have leaves that extend and cascade out, being very pinnate in form. This plant will eventually send out rhizomes (green root-like projections) that will grow new ferns. This fern is a very durable and vigorous plant that prefers moist soil, has high water/humidity needs, and as most ferns, it does not appreciate direct light.
This fern is popular as a house plant and easy to care for. This plant does great in pots and would also be more suitable for a large hanging basket. Likewise, it will do fine in any terrariums of moderate size if pruned. It will get too large too fast for small container gardens.
