Red bandfish (Cepola macrophthalma)

Fish of the Cepola genus of the Cepolidae (bandfishes) family of the Cepoloidea superfamily of the Percoidei suborder of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Red bandfish (Cepola macrophthalma) was first described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).

It inhabits the depth of 15-400 meters. It lives in holes that it makes in a sandy or silty bottom. The maximum recorded length is 80 cm, specimens up to 40 cm long are more common. It feeds on zooplankton and crustaceans.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
