Greater forkbeard

Greater forkbeard, Phycis blennoides

Ink on paper

Artist: Rebecca Jeffree

The greater forkbeard is a deep water fish related to cod and haddock. It is distributed throughout European waters. While it is sometimes eaten in parts of Europe, it is not particularly easy to market in the UK as it is not popular for eating like other species, and so is often discarded at sea.

About the artist:

There is something about the watery effect of ink paintings that seems to suit fish. I used Winsor and Newton‘s drawing inks for this greater forkbeard. The different colours are often immiscible, creating unpredictable mottled effects that give the fish’s skin a lovely texture.
