From the Editor… August in Malta is considered one of the best months by many – warmer weather, a myriad of activities and events going on pretty much all over the place, coupled with the traditional ‘summer holidays’ away from the office Malta is significantly brighter during this month. Interestingly however, Malta simultaneously slows down during this same month. Soaring temperatures and longer hours of daylight tend to take their toll on locals who generally retreat to beaches and seaside resorts to enjoy the peak of summer rather than embracing productivity. I suppose it has something to do with being Mediterranean, or maybe it’s just a Maltese thing – nevertheless, if you’re visiting Malta for the first time you should expect to enjoy the most leisurely month of the year, whereas if you’re a local and you’re on your way back home to spend some time with friends and loved ones, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you back home and wish you the very best of the summer season! If you’re visiting Malta this summer a trip to Comino is almost mandatory – and here’s why.

ituated at the heart of the channel that separates Malta and Gozo, Comino is often referred to as a haven for snorkelers, divers, windsurfers and ramblers alike. Set over 3.5 square kilometres, Comino is car-free and virtually uninhabited, with the exception of a single hotel. Known for its crystalline waters and spectacular sights, Comino is a wellrounded destination offering a myriad

of activities for both locals and tourists. Apart from the popular Blue Lagoon, Comino offers other spectacular beaches such as the idyllic Santa Maria Bay – a chilled beach nestled away from the humdrum of more popularly frequented beaches. Despite being busier during the summer months, Comino has proved equally popular during the colder season with walkers, rock climbers and photographers. Should you happen to visit during these months, keep an eye out for the wild thyme that grows profusely and fills the air with its distinct scent. In the past, Comino was inhabited during the Roman period but did not gain significance until the arrival of the Knights in 1530. During this period, the island was interestingly used as hunting grounds. Though stark and barren today, Comino was home to several wild boar and hares during this time. Hunting was taken very seriously and The Grandmasters went to great lengths to ensure that their game on Comino was protected: anyone found breaking the embargo on hunting could expect to serve three years rowing on a galley

Throughout history, the Island also acted as a staging post in the defence of the Maltese Islands against the Ottoman attacks, and more notoriously, the island also proved a useful base for corsair pirates operating in the central Mediterranean. A short walk around the Island will reveal a small chapel dedicated to the Return of Our Lady from Egypt. This was first built in 1618 and has been restored several times since then. Other architectural landmarks include St. Mary’s Tower which was also erected

by the Knights of Malta during the same year on the orders of Grandmaster Wignacourt and designed by Maltese architect Vittorio Cassar. After WWII, Comino remained a backwater until its fortunes revived with tourism in the mid-60s. In 2012 Comino was awarded the QualityCoast Award for its efforts in becoming a sustainable tourist destination. Following this award, Comino has been selected for inclusion in the global atlas for sustainable tourism DestiNet.

he principal divisions of the year are set out by the annual national and parochial religious feasts and processions. The hot summer months are the festa months, the village and town feasts with their bands and their fireworks displays - a cacophony which is hard to beat!

In Malta we regulate our lives by the daily and monthly cycle of religious activities. For some the working day starts with the ringing of the Paternoster bell half an hour before the first mass at 5am. It ends with the final bell of the day – a sombre one – rung two or three hours after sunset, a request for the living to remember the dead in their prayers. 02

We wish our saints a happy feast with éclat, in a high pitch and with astonishing ardour. And fireworks of such splendour that, at times, make the galaxies above blush in comparison. The festa may be described as a traditional theatrical performance at its best. Everyone has a role to play, and plays it with panache. There are committees, confraternities and compromises. Spirituality and profanity go hand in hand. There are devotional images and secular goingson. Baroque imagery and earthly rivalry close behind. There’s pageantry; and

pettiness; but also enthusiasm. If the saints are really watching we must at least be making them smile, if not laugh, on their feast day. In the villages and rural towns, housewives start cleaning and polishing their houses even more than they do usually, and excitement levels are high during the week leading up to the festa. Brass doorknobs and ornaments are polished to gleam. Often doors, windows and façades are painted anew – the village festa makes people feel proud to form part of their respective communities. Preparations may also include the purchasing, or sewing, of new outfits for the whole family. Sweets and cakes are either made or bought, and fridges are stocked up with cold drinks to greet friends and family who join on the day of the festa. Outdoor celebrations usually start a week or so before the actual feast day. Lights go up - lights are everywhere! The streets are decorated with plenty of bunting, flights of papier-mâché angels and flags. Streets take on a festive ambience. Fireworks enthusiasts prepare all year round for their festa, excelling at ingenious displays of both ground and aerial pyrotechnics.

No festa would be the same without a band or two

Then of course there are the bands. The first instance that a band took part in a religious procession in Malta is depicted in a 16th century sketch representing the feast of St Lawrence. There is at least one band club, and sometimes two, in towns and villages around Malta and Gozo. Boys and girls who are musically inclined are taught to play an instrument at the local band club, and you will come across various accomplished composers especially during the band marches. No festa would be the same without a band or two. During the celebrations the band, in the face of considerable difficulties, plays secular tunes from some popular opera, but more likely, a march is usually composed by a Maltese composer, possibly the present or past band conductor. The air is filled with

so much noise that one must talk in a very loud voice to be understood at all, thereby increasing the total uproar. On the day of the festa the parish church looks its very best; a symbol of eternal life. Outside it is all lit up. Inside many of its treasures are exhibited. There are stupendous flower arrangements, rich damasks, silver candelabra, the smell of incense, vivid colours. It is a fitting backdrop to the happenings outside. The procession which takes place in the evening feels much slower, with people following the statue of the saint being celebrated, accompanied by the band. This statue of the saint whose feast it is, is carried shoulder high. Children dressed in their best indulge in all the treats a festa offers including soft drinks,

There are hotdog stalls, hills of popcorn, candy floss and chips served with practically everything. Every festa is the same but different. On the feast of St Julian for instance, shooters let off a feu de joie in honour of their patron saint. The shooters' salute was introduced in 1983. With the introduction of new distractions the festa has lost some of its importance especially in towns like Sliema. But many Maltese still like to spend time, energy and resources on this traditional activity. Saints may be marching out in other places but not on these islands. This is their world, and the Maltese like it to be so.

A maltese abroad

Food to go Maltese chef Nicole Pisani recently made international news after she abandoned her job at a top restaurant in London to cook in a school canteen. She tells Veronica Stivala that it was travel that inspired her approach to cookery.

A

t 17, Nicole Pisani decided, as most teenagers do, to travel. She describes this as another form of education. “Travelling made me feel less shy and I started to make friends and see different cultures while experiencing different ways of eating.” She travelled to Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, and started to understand what flavour and spice tasted like and what fresh ingredients were actually like. She describes falling in love with gastronomy in Australia – both with the food, and the way it was eaten; perfect but informal. After running a restaurant in Malta for a number of years, Nicole had the opportunity to work in London again. She was involved in operations during the opening of the Corinthia Hotel

in London, and then moved on to a restaurant she describes as 'amazing' called the Modern Pantry, that is run by Anna Hensen. “With ingredients like sea beets and tomatillo, my mind exploded. I remember having two trial shifts that lasted all day. I called home after the first one, saying "I really want to be in this kitchen!" On the second day, without being asked, I filleted the entire fish delivery in an hour, which would normally take an average of three,” she smiles. “However all that glitters isn’t gold, shifts were long and arduous and the cost of living in London was higher than the one I was used to back home. But all that didn’t matter, because I wanted to learn as much as I could from these top kitchens,” she recalls.

Nicole eventually returned home for a summer and opened a café in Malta. There she’d smoke duck and salmon overnight, and roast whole chickens to be served in salads and sandwiches. “I remember that, after visiting me a couple of times, my best friend got hooked on smoking fish in her backyard for the rest of the summer. It feels good to teach people back home things you’ve learnt from far away,” she muses. Soon after, she was offered the opportunity to work at Nopi, a renowned Middle-Eastern and Asian-inspired brasserie in London. Nicole was first employed as a chef and eventually promoted to manager. “It was amazing to work for Yotam Ottolenghi and Cornelia Staeubli, but the hours were long and the constant strife for perfection eventually became increasingly difficult to deal with,” she notes. Eventually, Nicole felt that she needed a change and decided to take a short rest from restaurant life. Just as she was about to go on that break, she was introduced to Henry Dimbleby through Twitter. Henry is the founder of Leon and co-author of the School Food Plan, making great strides to improve the food served to children in school. There was a vacancy for a chef at his son's primary school in Hackney. They met and hit it off and she took the job, with the main aim of highlighting what can be accomplished in a school, thereby creating a blueprint to help others (using good practice from all around the UK). Four months later Nicole spends her days “with a team of lovely Gayhurst ladies who are starting to understand what being proud of what you serve really means”. They are gradually introducing the concept of comparison between ingredients found in their lunch meals, and educational activities. The school provides mushroom growing kits in the classroom and a tank with crab and lobster; pea shoots in pots on the tables and edible flowers to eat in bowls during lunch. “We want food to be fun and enjoyable for children to have a sense of where it actually comes from, and not from a packet!” says Nicole.

Purchasing Immovable Property John and Anna Dawson may very well be fictional characters, but the benefits and legal matters described below are nothing other than real.

H

ouse hunting has always been an activity that steered up great excitement for Anna Dawson. Her parents, being relatively adventurous with their investments, had purchased a number of properties in Continental Europe throughout her youth. Her father would often return from a trip holding photo albums containing collections of pictures of properties that he had visited during his exploratory journeys. They would go through the albums together and he would describe every detail of the properties seen and the villages visited. It was now her turn to travel overseas in search of a place where she could escape to when city life became too overwhelming. Anna’s first task was to get informed. She had read a number of articles about Malta after John, her husband, returned from one of his business trips, excited to take her and the children to visit this beautiful Mediterranean island that, in his opinion, ticks all the boxes for an investment opportunity. In a nutshell, Malta’s financial outlook is positive. Core industries, including property development, tourism, financial services and online gaming, are performing very well. Demand for immovable property is high and Malta, being a small island, will always have a limited supply of property in comparison to the demand. One article in particular explained how Maltese property prices have been rising for the past six quarters, after a short slump in late 2012. The house price index rose by 7.58% during the year to Q3 of 2014 and the value of property prices rose by 1.30% during Q3 of 2014.

John is already well acquainted with the island. Indeed, he travelled to Malta on a regular basis to oversee the operations of his local trading company. He often boasts about the professional service that he receives by his team in Malta and most of all that Malta offers the best net effective tax rate in Europe. Once they arrive on the island the Dawson family spend the first few days travelling around so that Anna and the kids can acquaint themselves. It does not take Anna long to get on board with John’s wish to but a property in Malta. It is now a matter of finding the property that suits them best. But before this, they pay a visit to their Advocate in Valletta. Whilst the offices are rather formal, John’s advocate welcomes them in a casual and very hospitable manner. After some small talk, John gets to the point and requests a brief explanation

about the legal and fiscal conditions involved in buying property in Malta. Their advocate receives his request with pleasure and explains that being Citizens of the EU, but not having resided in Malta for a period of five years at any time preceding the date when they would buy the property, means that they may purchase their primary residence, or any immovable property required for their business activities or supply of services, without the necessity of obtaining a specific permit called the Acquisition of Immovable Property (AIP) Permit. Should they, one day, actually and physically reside in Malta for a period of five years, they would be free to acquire any number of properties that they may wish without the need of such permit. acquisition of any property, unless the property falls in a Special Designated Area (SDA). Indeed, SDAs are luxury residential developments that qualify for international investment and thus are exempted from the AIP rules. Property is purchased through a notarial deed. Therefore, John and Anna shall have to engage a Notary to publish a public deed of sale/purchase. Whilst there is no tax imposed on property ownership in Malta, 5% Duty on Documents is imposed on the purchase price of the immovable property. Indeed, being a public officer, the Notary is entrusted to collect the taxes and deposit these with the Tax Authorities. A discount is applicable if the Dawsons, being European Union Citizens, declare

Malta offers the best net effective tax rate in Europe. on the deed that they shall reside in the property being purchased as their sole ordinary residence. Should this be the case, a preferential rate of 3.5% is applied on the first â‚Ź150,000 of the price.

She now fully understands the reason why her father loved investing in property abroad. Pity he never had the occasion to visit Malta.

resden watchmaker Ferdinand A. Lange was onto something when he laid the foundations of his Saxon fine watchmaking business in 1845. His superior pocket-watches are still in great demand among collectors all over the world. Following WWII, the enterprise was expropriated and the name of A. Lange & Söhne was almost wiped out, however, in 1990 Walter Lange, the great-grandson of the late Mr Lange, took the plunge and decided to breathe new life into the business. Today, the A. Lange & Söhne brand produces a couple of thousands of watches every year, all made exclusively of gold or platinum. All wristwatches are powered by exclusive watch movements that are developed and designed in-house, and lavishly decorated by hand, making every watch a unique work of art, apart from a sought-after collector’s timepiece. “Originally A. Lange & Söhne timepieces were regularly presented as royal gifts to reflect and symbolise the magnificence of the empire of Saxony. This explains the use of luxurious materials such as rubies and diamonds for instance,” explains Mr Dondi. “Today, every A. Lange & Söhne wristwatch is completely assembled and engraved by hand; technically speaking we are still using the same techniques established back in 1845 without ever compromising on finishing, or quality,” he interestingly notes. At this point I’m pretty impressed, but ultimately a gorgeous looking watch isn’t enough. So what about the technology and previously mentioned innovation I wonder? “We have developed over 50 movements over the past two centuries,” Mr. Dondi explains. “A. Lange & Söhne’s objective is to be renowned and sought-after for its impressive levels of precision and finishing. This is reflected in the fact that every one of our wristwatches carries at least one patent, which is pretty impressive in itself.” “In addition, all our watch springs are made by hand in-house as opposed to outsourcing this part or purchasing it from third-parties. The spring is the heart of your watch, now if this is made by someone else then perhaps you are not in full control of your watch after all,” he charmingly replies. I understand that the past, as well as the present, both play a pivotal role in the A. Lange & Söhne – now what about the future? “The future is sensual, mysterious and until now, unknown. I’d personally recommend looking out for A. Lange & Söhne at Watches&Wonders, The Haute Horlogerie Exhibition in Asia next September,” Mr Dondi concludes with a smile.

Outdoor Clubbing: Gianpula Complex Gianpula Complex is Malta’s foremost open-air entertainment address during the summer months. It is a nightlife village with several venues suited to different events and ages. Tooth Colour and Whitening Techniques Is your smile even in colour or multicoloured? Colour is one major factor related to the aesthetics of teeth. The first colour of deciduous or baby teeth is milky white, hence the term milk teeth. As we grow up, our milk teeth are replaced with denser, slightly more yellow, permanent teeth. ome free divers have been recorded to go into a close-tocoma state when diving to 250 to 300 feet. Physiologists say the human body shouldn’t be conscious at that depth. And yet, it is. Regardless of the limitations of our body, we can all hold our breath under water. “The silence and peace of a free dive allows you to experience your body and mind. My passion for the sport and philosophy behind it spur me to want to share it with others who have a similar curiosity,” says Luke Cassar, an avid free diver who has practiced the sport for the past six years. There’s a mystery around this extreme watersport, as free divers push the boundaries of the human body to reach new depths – literally.

Free divers go into the depths of the sea with just one breathe of air, using no scuba gear or breathing apparatus, only their lungs. They delve deeper into a relaxed mental state with limited movements every action, every thought carefully premeditated. “Free diving opens you up to a world of breathing techniques and breathholding, which submerge you into an experience of freedom in the deep blue,” says Luke. There are many different types of free diving – with or without weights, with fins and so on. Recreational free diving is different to competitive free diving as a completely different approach is adopted. “When I dive recreationally I respect the sea, I respect my limits, and I can literally stay in the water for six hours at a stretch,” he says.

Freediving

The silence and peace of a free dive allows you to experience your body and mind. Luke has always been closely connected to the sea. As a child he loved to snorkel, sail and swim. “My travels took me to Asia where I spent most of my time learning meditation over the course of five years. When I returned from India a friend introduced me to free diving as a means to exploring meditation through a different practice,” he explains. On his first session, Luke realised he could hold his breath for over two minutes. This is a relatively long time for someone who never practiced the sport. “I was hooked.” Luke and three friends spent a summer free diving every day. Their expeditions took them to explore the 15 sunken shipwrecks scattered around the Maltese Islands.

“Preparing yourself and your breath before a dive will determine how long you can dive for. It’s a mental practice. You need to let go of any anxiety, stress or of setting any goals,” Luke explains. “You learn to resist the urge to breathe when you’re under water. This is when you train your mind to go further into relaxation, relax all your muscles, even your tongue. Your mind cannot be racing; surrender to the sea, your heartbeat synchs with your surroundings,” he says. Malta is one of the best places in the world to free dive. Our coastline offers plunging depths just off the coast, unlike other countries, like Thailand, where you need to drive a boat for miles to reach 40 meters depth.

Freediving

Malta is ranked as one of the top five places in the world for this sport, with an average 30 to 40 meter visibility in the sea. “You can look at a wreck that’s 35 meters deep and see the whole wreck, interact with fish and other sea animals. Our coastlines are dotted with caves and swim-throughs. At the ‘Blue Hole’ near the Azure window in Dwejra, Gozo, you can dive 18 meters into a deep natural hole and ascend on the other side into the vast open sea.” Luke is dedicated to instructing people who are curious about the sport to build their confidence and practice safely. He met up with Jesper Stechmann, the 2010 World Free Dive Champion, and together they work to promote this extreme sport in Malta. Stechmann, born in Denmark, holds a personal record of diving 102 meters (the approximate equivalent of the length of the Portomaso Skyscraper in Malta) and back up again in one breath. Jesper now spends much of his time giving freediving lessons. The most important safety tip in free diving is to buddy up. Luke and Jesper brought together a community of free divers through the ’Freedivers Ready’ Facebook page, where anyone going out for a dive can post on the page and find a buddy or three to join the adventure. It’s also advisable to get a proper introduction to the sport by a qualified and experienced instructor who can teach you the right techniques to ensure you don’t cross your limits. Luke and Jesper offer courses for anyone from beginners to experienced divers who are eager to explore the sport in crystal clear Maltese waters. “For the dedicated free diver, the sport is a calling and the level of passion and satisfaction increases every time you get in the water. There is something deeply peaceful about floating around 10 meters below the surface without needing to breath” Luke concludes with a smile.

Fish by the Sea It is expected that during the peak of summer visitors to our islands came here to enjoy our refreshing, clear seas and between one swim and another, find a cool place close to the water to enjoy typical Maltese flavours, fresh fruit and vegetables, crisp salads and of course tasty fish. here is no escaping the reality that neither in quantity nor in selection do fresh fish catches satisfy demand. Not only has the Mediterranean been over–fished along the years but today more people seek it out and are prepared to pay the always increasing prices. To be truthful the scarcity of select fish is no new phenomenon. In centuries past it was only at the tables of the Knights of Malta, the Nobility and the monied merchant classes that fine fish and sea food were to be found. Shipping vessels and methods were far more limited than today and consequently relatively small catches were landed and prices were high. The poorer levels of society found themselves in a dilemma, not being able to afford this fresh fish yet being constrained to eat fish, or rather a no meat diet, on many days of the year. This is how fish alien to Maltese waters like cod, herring and sardines found their way to our markets in various preserved forms; salted, smoked or in brine. Having painted this picture of gloom, I am pleased to say that much fish still reaches our markets and restaurants. Other sea creatures like octopus and squid may be frozen yet locally caught earlier on in the season and when in abundant never treated with any preserving chemicals or the like. The fish may vary depending on the restaurant’s supplier as not all fishermen actually fish for the same species. Amongst the more prized species one should find the Pixxi San Pietru (John Dory), members of the scorpion family like the Cippullazza, Skorfna and Gallina. Pagru and Kaħlija, both belonging to the Bream Family are much appreciated too. There

food review is often not enough to go round and thankfully – although to many this may sound blasphemous – there are a number of fish farms around Malta which rear Sea Bass - Spnott, Gilt Head Bream - Awrat and Gurbell for which to the best of my knowledge there is no English name. All of these are delicious fish with delicate white flesh and may be prepared in different ways. Their freshness is guaranteed and prices are extremely affordable. Swordfish and Tuna – end of July and the beginning of August mark the very end of the early Tuna season – are usually grilled and served simply with a wedge of lemon or a fresh herb and caper sauce. These are fish for the fussier eaters who are put off by fish bones. Fish restaurants abound along the sea shore in towns and villages like Marsaxlokk, St. Paul’s Bay and St. Julian’s. In the last of these fishing bays, down by the fisherman's boats, Gululu, a typical Maltese restaurant, always has an abundance of fish on offer including several of those mentioned above. Gululu is acclaimed for its fish based starter dishes too which comprise of various fritters and patties and also pan seared octopus,

calamari and local prawns all ideal to share, family style. During the last week of August one may be lucky to taste the first Lampuki. This very “Maltese” of fish has a most particular and agreeable taste and is best cooked fried with a zalza pikkanti - a caper, olive and tomato sauce - on the side. The Lampuka – Dolphin Fish or Dorado – is extremely popular with locals and Gululu celebrates the season with a special menu devoted solely to dishes featuring this fish as do neighbouring Cafe Cuba for fish lovers a visit down to Spinola Bay in St Julian's is a must.

upcoming designers Malta’s fashion scene has been steadily growing over the last few years. Popular opinion says that it has also been gaining significant progress - in terms of choice, quality and, of course, the most important factor of all - public interest.

I

n general, in Malta, we do tend to celebrate our local artists and their works especially when it comes to traditional works of arts (for instance, paintings and sculptures). Sadly, this mentality has been slow into extending itself towards viewing our fashion designers as artists. Few are looking at their pieces as items to supplement their wardrobes with, and most prefer shopping at franchise stores and from other mass-

market brands. This has led to very few of our designers reaching that point when they can take on their art and passion as a full-time enterprise. Many people working within the Maltese fashion industry live two lives, investing in two careers and getting slightly exhausted but always thriving on passion, spirit and adrenaline. Today, we meet three fledgling Maltese designers – Ritienne Zammit, Marco

Parascandalo and Gaetano Busuttil. Each of these designers have a unique product and they have managed to amass quite a following over the last few years. This has been largely helped by very well-received shows at the annual Malta Fashion Week, which is currently Malta’s best platform for launching and showcasing our local talent. Both Ritienne and Gaetano have won the 'Best New Fashion Designer Awards.'

Ritienne Zammit is a very interesting woman and she continues to build a reputation as an experimental designer. Over her past three collections, I have watched her experiment with a varied range of materials including but not limited to, metal, plastic, fur and brocade. I revel in the fact that her designs are never constrained by traditional ‘fashion’ rules – she lets her fertile imagination run and the result is always something somewhat unexpected.

She says her inspiration comes from her natural surroundings, from traditions and culture, from history which, in Malta, is all around us. Her last collection was largely based on an important portion of Maltese history; the story of Dun Mikiel Xerri. When asked whether she feels she has already developed or is still developing the ‘look’ of her brand, Ritienne expresses her love for versatility and says that she believes the ‘look’ will continue to develop and change as the years progress. I asked Ritienne what she finds most limiting working as a fashion designer on this small Island – “We are a small island – everything takes longer to reach its full potential. There is also a general lack of focused productions, very limited stock and a lack of technical availabilities in the world of textiles.”

Marco Parascandalo is a tall young man with a winning smile. His brand PARASCANDALO has become a very popular name on this island. He made head waves last year when he released a collection of slogan sweaters and t-shirts using Maltese phrases. In fact, there are many who would associate the word SKANDLU (meaning scandal) with Marco – his most popular slogan design. Marco actually started working within the industry in London; he interned at different fashion houses acquiring different trades such as sewing,

embroidery, styling and illustration. He decided to come back to Malta a few years ago and continue to develop his own brand here. Marco cites his current environment as inspiration, along with fashion from both the 70s and 90s eras. Although Marco does have another daytime job, it is is still within the fashion industry – he works as a visual merchandiser and buyer for high street fashion brands.

His last collection, shown last May at Malta Fashion Week, built on the previous year’s but was a little bit more refined. Whilst the ‘SKANDLU’ slogan remained, there’s now a bit more elegance and a bit more maturity to his work.

To close, I asked each designer a couple of random fashion questions – here are their answers: 2015 Fashion love? Ritienne: Clash of prints, slogan tees, androgyny, faux fur and pastel colours. Marco: Parascandalo's IN THE SKY collection – love that! Gaetano: Pastel colours and the femininity trend.

Who is the man/woman who wears your clothes? Ritienne: The character of my brand’s clothing transmits a strong, rebellious and powerful individual with a dominant message for society. Marco: A person who enjoys standing out from the crowd but, at the same time, places an importance on feeling comfortable. Gaetano: A fearless and powerful woman.

What do you think of the latest gender neutral fashion craze? Ritienne: I love the contemporary/ modern look it creates – minimal and timeless.

Marco: I’m very into that, from a young age, I myself always wanted to dress in a gender neutral manner. I also have some pieces within my collection which can be worn by both males and females. Gaetano: I love it!

Gaetano Busuttil is a man on a mission. He has always been interested in fashion design, but it was when he started working in a local textile shop that he really honed his skills and talent. Right now, he is actually working on his brand ‘Couture by Gaetano’ in a full-time capacity. He also feels he has already developed the ‘look’ of his brand, which is mainly built around long dresses with transparencies and embroidered embellishments. He is inspired by many things and says that ideas tend to pop into his

head at unexpected times. He likes to carry paper and a pencil with him so he can sketch and jot down his fleeting thoughts and ideas; he’d hate to forget them. Gaetano thinks that the hardest thing for a Maltese fashion designer is, that people don’t always appreciate the difference between designers, seamstresses and tailors. “If all you want is a replica of a dress in a picture, a seamstress/tailor is sufficient. However, if you want something designed for your body, for a specific occasion, that’s a designer’s job.”

Should models be skinny? Ritienne: I never supported the size zero fad - Models should be in good physical fitness, but not skinny. Marco: It depends on the designer’s mental picture for that particular item he/she is showcasing – although this a skinny-obsessed world! Gaetano: A model should have a nice body, not necessarily a size zero body but yes, models should be quite skinny.

The Azure Window, Dwejra GOZO This enormous natural limestone arch is found by the shores of the quaint village of Dwejra [Dewy-rah] in Gozo. Known also for its charming Inland Sea, Dwejra bay is home to one of the most spectacular scuba diving spots in Gozo. We recommend visiting at sunset.

GĦasri Valley gozo Għasri [Ah-sree] Valley is a picturesque natural creek with cristalline waters and a small pebbly beach. Getting there may be tricky, as it involves over 100 steps down a cliff; but the breathtaking views straigh off a postcard definitely make up for them!

Golden bay MALTA Large clay hills slope gently around the waters of this secluded bay, found along the north west coast of the island. Taking its name from its golden coloured sand, Golden Bay is one of Malta’s most sought-after and popular sandy beaches during the summer months.

Dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, the colloquiallyknown 'Rotunda' is a Roman Catholic church in the centre of Mosta. It is currently the fourth largest unsupported dome in the world, and the third largest in Europe.

Tumas Group Announces Major Investment at Hilton Malta Tumas Group has announced an intensive programme of investment at the Hilton Malta hotel, which will reach a peak in 2016. W

hen Steve and I first got engaged, we had an idea of an intimate wedding shared with the people who mattered to us most. Spending most of our days day dreaming and saving for trips away, getting married abroad seemed the perfect way to say 'I do'. Malta was the one of the few places we researched that we immediately fell in love with. Who wouldn't want to say their vows amidst that beautiful landscape full of such friendly people and warm sunshine? I could immediately picture us getting married in one of Malta's stunning locations. We chose to hire a wedding planner and clicked straight away with the friendly team at Sarah Young's weddings. They helped us to create our intimate, dream wedding, without a single notion of stress. And on 25th May 2015 we said 'I do' in the beautiful orange grove of a stunning garden villa on the island. Sarah and her team ensured the day ran smoothly and was everything we had dreamed of and more; the sun shone the entire day, the flowers for the bouquets were gorgeous and looked perfect alongside the gardens in the villa. All our guests thoroughly enjoyed the day and the days before and after the wedding, which were spent exploring the beautiful island of Malta. It was such a perfect day and this island will always hold special memories for us and all our guests who came. I think we may just have to return for our first year anniversary!

San Anton Gardens: a mini Versailles

San Anton palace is the official residence of the President of Malta and is not generally open to visitors. In the winter months concerts are held in one of its beautiful halls mostly to raise funds for the President’s charity, The Community Chest Fund. These are by invitation only. However, anyone can pay a visit to its well-kept and attractive gardens during opening hours. Both locals and visitors can be seen enjoying the ambience and peace of these gardens and they are especially attractive to mothers with young children as there is no traffic to worry about. This palace and its gardens were a private summer residence and a refuge for the Grand Masters.

T

his elegant palace, in Attard, goes back to the early 17th century. In 1620 the Provençal knight of St John, Antoine de Paul who was considered to be a ‘frivolous’ bonvivant, built a villa to serve as his country retreat. Antoine de Paule was conferred the title of Eminenza by Pope Urban VIII, thus according him equal status with cardinals. De Paule named his villa after his patron saint, St Anthony. The gardens were laid down right at the beginning according to visitors’ accounts. He went on enlarging both the villa and the garden having fountains, pools and statues constructed. He must have foreseen that keeping the garden beautiful and watered, especially in the dry summer months was going to be difficult and he had reservoirs built on land acquired in nearby Balzan and Lija. Because it is situated more or less in the geographical centre of Malta and is protected by the Great Ridge the gardens are spared the north winds. In fact the 600 or so citrus trees – orange, lemon, Seville orange and tangerine – produce so much that Her Excellency the President has a citrus fête at the end of January. A number of school children are encouraged to help with picking the fruit beforehand and then the citrus and citrus products, such as marmalade, orange and lemon cakes and other food, made by the kitchen brigade at San Anton are sold during the fête, proceeds going to The

Community Chest Fund. On this occasion the private gardens of the Palace are open to the public. There are 15 acres of public gardens in San Anton and four and a half acres of private gardens. Let it also said that one visitor compared these gardens to the orangerie at Versailles. Antoine de Paule became the 56th Grand Master of the Order of Malta in 1623. He died in Malta on 9 June 1636 when he was 85 years old after a long illness. He bequeathed San Anton to the Order.

According to the historian Thomas Freller in his The Palaces of the Grand Masters in May 1644 the famous Danish physician and scientist Thomas Bartholin “was not very impressed by the villa but he admired the garden much more..." In March 1663 the baron of Eulenberg visited the ‘summer residence of the Grand Master, called S. Anton: here the air is not so pure and healthy as in Boschetto. At San Anton we saw a fountain with a huge water pipe and 40 other side pipes. In the middle there

were gardens with Seville orange trees. Another fountain was sprinkling water as if it were raining. There is a long passage which is surrounded by stone walls on both sides. "Further down... there is a place with hunters’ lodges to shoot at ducks which were swimming in a pond." The love of some Maltese for hunting goes back a long time! Freller writes that “Although we lack exact plans, it can be deduced from these comments that San Anton garden was then laid out according to the typical baroque ‘French style’, that is it was built in geometric order with at least one middle axis.” Giovanni Francesco Abela, Auditor of Grand Master Antoine de Paule praised the gardens in his important work Della Descrittione di Malta.

Other grand masters made changes and embellishments in the palace and the garden: the Portuguese Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena extended the water supply; Grand Master de Rohan Polduc the French aristocratic who did his best to save the Order from total destruction, and to further the well-being of the Maltese people, completed and enriched the Palace Chapel of Our Lady of the Pilar and incorporated the arms of the Grand Masters who contributed most to the palace and the gardens. There is another chapel at San Anton palace, the Russian Orthodox chapel, which was quite recently refurbished. In December 1995 Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman pilot-cosmonaut, presented a magnificent icon to the then President Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici for permanent display in the chapel. The icon depicts St George and the dragon. The Russian connection with Malta goes back a long way. In fact there was a royal

birth at the palace in 1876, that of the second daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Princess Victoria Melita. Princess Melita was later to become Tsarina-in-waiting as the wife of Grand Duke Kirill who had assumed the title of Tsar after the murder of Nicholas II. These gardens are worth a visit. You will be walking in the footsteps of many eminent personalities including Queen Marie of Romania who lived there for

varying periods which she wrote about in The Story of My Life, Sir Alexander Ball, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who loved the cool air after the oppressive heat of Valletta, Lady Hester Stanhope, Empress Marie Feodorovna, Edward VII (both as Prince of Wales and King}, Queen Elizabeth II and so many more. In fact many royal visits are commemorated in the trees planted by the royal personages in the private and public gardens or in marble wall tablets.

Australia: a massive land of beauty and adventure. Ranging from tropical forest to dry arid deserts, from cosmopolitan cities like Sydney to UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Great Barrier Reef, it's no surprise that this land down under attracts millions of tourists every year. Covering 7,692,024 square kilometres, it is safe to say that the country has an abundance of must-sees and must-dos. After travelling through this spectacular country for a year, there is definitely one area that will remain in my memory throughout my lifetime: the amazing Whitsundays Islands.

magine endless white, sandy, beaches and warm, crystal clear water... Green hills, blue skies, a warm breeze and parrots in the trees. It is no wonder the Whitsundays are a popular and upmarket holiday destination among Australians and foreigners alike. Situated on the North East coast of the state of Queensland, this group of 74 islands experiences warm weather all year round, with temperatures rarely falling below 20째. If calm turquoise water isn't

enough of a beautiful sight, during the months between May and September, you are likely to witness humpback whales playing in the water on their migratory journey north from the Antarctic to give birth in Queensland's warmer waters. In fact, a common misconception is that the best time to visit northern Queensland is during the Australian summer months of December to February. However, this is actually the least ideal time to visit, as cyclones can hit the state

and dangerous jellyfish can be found in the waters. Although winter has lower humidity and safer water, the islands are still popular all year round. At just 5km squared, Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island and the most commercial of them all, with Hamilton Island Resort and private villas making up 30 per cent of the island, the rest untouched forest. Sailing around the islands, watching spectacular sunsets, and trekking or quad biking through the bush, are just some of the luxuries one gets to experience here. Even just sipping a glass of wine, overlooking the breathtaking marina is enjoyable enough, but it is even more spectacular thanks to the friendly and colourful birds that inhabit the island. Be sure to never leave your food unattended outside because you might find a cockatoo or a kookaburra enjoying your lunch before you do. As beautiful, luxurious and relaxing as Hamilton Island is, it isn't the only highlight of the Whitsundays. Many of

the other islands here are also renowned for their beauty and serenity, with some offering exclusive accommodation on pristine beaches. THE DELICATA CLASSIC WINE FESTIVAL

Malta’s greatest wine event of the year is back for its 14th year, at the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta from 6th till 9th August, from 7pm until midnight – and then three weeks later from 28th till 30th August it happens all over again in Nadur, Gozo. The way it works is simple – entrance is free. To try the wines simply purchase a wristband for the night and a souvenir glass for €12.50 (which is then yours to keep) upon entrance to the gardens. The last glasses and wristbands are sold at 11pm,

the last wine is poured at 11.30pm and the festival closes at midnight. No glasses or bottles will be sold or alcohol poured to anyone under the age of 17. At the Valletta Wine Festival live cooking stalls will be

serving suckling pig, pasta, pizza, paella, koftas, kebabs, Indian dishes, sushi and Thai noodles dishes, a selection of cheese and mixed platters and desserts. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights only, Island Caterers will serve a Mediterranean Grill buffet, accompanied by Delicata wines, in the fully seated restaurant area down in the Saluting Battery, with its breath-taking views over the harbour, for €36 per person. Reservations are highly recommended (see contact details below). Live entertainment will be performed every night at the Valletta festival starting with

an opening night concert by Red Electrick and Planet Seed (Thurs), Billy Lee and the Spiteri Lucas Band (Fri), Relikc and the Crowns (Sat) and Cash & Band and George Curmi (Puse) and his band (Sun). The festival will be compered by Mireille Bonello and street magic will be performed by Ivan Mallia on all four nights. In Nadur, Gozo, there will also be live entertainment every night and an assortment of food stalls selling both Gozitan and international dishes. There will also be a regular shuttle service operating each night between the Mgarr ferry terminal and the festival in Nadur for a nominal fee of €2 round trip per person.

application procedure including detailed due diligence and background verification checks, the applicants and their families are granted full citizenship. To qualify for citizenship, the main applicant must be at least 18 years of age, meet all of the application conditions, make a nonrefundable contribution to the National Development and Social Fund, and meet certain other requirements. The contribution amount is required to be paid by the main applicant in the sum of €650,000, with additional contributions required from the spouse and for each child under the age of 18. An application may include children between the ages of 18 and 26 years if they are financially dependent on the main applicant and are not married. In addition, parents over the age of 55 years may also be included in the application as dependants, if they are living with and are fully supported by the main applicant.

he IIP is a modern citizenship-byinvestment programme aimed at ultra-high net worth individuals and families worldwide. It offers citizenship in an EU Member State that is stable, neutral and highly respected, with an efficient application process, and the world’s strictest due diligence standards and vetting of applicants, thus ensuring only highly respectable clients will be admitted. Furthermore, the programme is capped and only 1,800 applications will be admitted. The IIP has been introduced with the aim of complementing the existing talent pool in Malta by attracting intellectual and financial capital that will further support inward investment to Malta. It allows for the grant of citizenship to duly qualified,

reputable foreign individuals and families who make a significant contribution to the economic development of Malta. The legal basis regarding citizenship-byinvestment is contained in Articles 10 (9) (b) and 24 (1) (i) of the Maltese Citizenship Act, Cap 188, and the Individual Investor Programme Regulations of the Republic of Malta, 2014. Furthermore, an agreement reached between the EU Commission and the Maltese Government on 29 January 2014 confers upon the IIP a unique legal status with explicit EU treaty protection acknowledged and approved by the EU Commission. The IIP requires a person to make an economic contribution to the country. In return, and subject to a very thorough

prior to issuance of certificate of naturalisation • Oath of Allegiance – all applicants aged 18 years and over are obliged to visit Malta in person to undertake the Oath of Allegiance. All applicants must have a clean personal background and no criminal record. A person who is deemed a potential national security risk, a reputational risk or is subject to criminal investigation, will also be denied citizenship. Malta has developed a four-tier due diligence system which is considered the most thorough in the world for this kind of programme. The names of successful applicants will be published annually, along with all other naturalisations granted by the Government. Applications must be made on the prescribed forms and be accompanied by the appropriate fees and specific documents which, in addition to the usual personal documentation such as passport

copies, birth certificates etc., include a medical certificate confirming that the main applicant and any dependants are not suffering from any contagious disease and that they are otherwise in good health; and a police certificate confirming that the applicants have no criminal record. Highly detailed due diligence checks are carried out and an application will be declined if it turns out that it contains false information or omissions. The Regulations stipulate that the process to achieve the issuance of a Certificate of Naturalisation under the IIP shall be a minimum of six months and a maximum of two years from the date of submission of the application. This includes the time taken to fulfil the property and investment requirements, as well as the one year residence requirement. Before the submission of an application to Government, all relevant information provided and the background of the applicant and any dependants are verified by one or several due diligence agents. fees and bank charge fees as well as a non-refundable deposit of €10,000 against the Government contribution, must have been received, the source of all funds must have been verified and a risk weighting procedure carried out. Within a four month period and subject to the application being approved in principle, the applicant is required to: • Remit the contribution (less the deposit already paid) • Demonstrate compliance with the property requirement • Show proof of residence for one year • Make the prescribed investment • Be in possession of a valid health insurance policy for the entire family with the requisite level of cover • Undertake the Oath of Allegiance in person in Malta, together with all dependants aged 18 years and above. Having satisfied all of the above requirements, a certificate of naturalisation can be issued, enabling successful applicants to become citizens of Malta.

Cephalo- what? Cephalopods are a group of organisms which include octopus, squid, cuttlefish and the bizarre looking nautilus. They are part of the invertebrate group called molluscs. The word cephalopods means that their head ("cephalo") is fused to their feet ("pods"), without any form of abdomen in between.

uch to everyone's surprise, cephalopods are very curious and clever animals, which is why we like to educate people about them at the Aquarium. They have very good vision with no blind spots; which can focus like a camera with the lens moving in and out. Octopus are fascinating, once we placed a GoPro camera in the tank with our octopus and she managed to open it after a couple of hours... which meant the camera got ruined. They have got three hearts with blue blood flowing through. They are always ready to jet off by expelling water out of their siphon along with ink if they need to confuse a predator. But their best 'trick' is camouflage; some species of octopus can actually change their colour and texture to blend in with their environment. The sad thing about octopus is that once they lay their eggs, they stop feeding and spend all their remaining energy taking care of their eggs which leads to the end of their life cycle. Right now we have a common octopus at the aquarium and in the past we had cuttlefish, which have laid eggs, and all their young were released back into the sea. Baby cuttlefish and octopus are identical to the adult but much tinier (and cuter).

ilfla is just such an island. More of an island-rock really. At its highest point it is 60 metres above sea level. Its base is 350 metres long. It is sufficiently distant from the south-west coastline to have been considered ideal for target practice. In fact, several fleets in the past used it to train their gunners. The bombing was stopped in 1971 because it had a detrimental effect on the islet’s wildlife. By 1988 legislation was passed declaring Filfla a nature reserve. No one is now allowed to land on the island except with permission, generally for scientific studies. Filfla is home to the endemic Maltese Wall Lizard, which is found only on this small islet. It is also home to four species of seabird. There are two kinds of land snails that are also said to be found nowhere else in the world. The population of this lizard is very limited and therefore highly vulnerable to any manmade or natural disasters. It is listed

in Appendix II (Strictly Protected Fauna) of the Berne Convention. It is said that filfel or felful, both of which mean red pepper, may have grown on the island – hence the name. Filfla retains that image of invincibility in the eyes of the Maltese. An image of strength and aloneness. It rears its head out of the crinkled Mediterranean. In the summer it sits alone, sizzling hot, like a kiln, under the unblemished blue sky and its cerulean light. Its sky-exposed land

is forsaken to the sea and the sun. It is reticent and sober. It belongs to no one. It has no fate. It has nothing to do but wait. Like Godot. A loose, lost bluff of rock. It just is. But it is an island nevertheless. Promising peace. Promising tranquillity. Seen from afar and, depending on the time of day, Filfa looks ghostly and transculent, like an iceberg in mid-sea; a place for solitude and contemplation. It has lived long enough to be wise. And is wise enough to be silent.

Air Malta Voted Amongst Top Airlines at World Airline Awards

Air Malta has achieved 6th place in the ‘Best Regional Airlines in Europe’ category at the Skytrax World Airline Awards™ 2015. For the fifth consecutive year Air Malta has been rated as one of the top airlines in the regional airlines category of carriers that operate predominately short haul or regional international flights.

The survey was conducted online between September 2014 and May 2015 with 18.9 million customer surveys completed, across a range of survey topics. The survey covered full-service and low-cost airlines and measured standards across 41 key performance indicators of airline front-line product and service. More than 105 different nationalities participated covering over 245 airlines from largest international airlines to smaller domestic carriers.

KLM and Air Malta sign a code-share agreement Daily flights between Amsterdam and Malta.

LM and Air Malta have signed a code-share agreement whereby KLM will place its code and flight numbers on flights operated by Air Malta between Malta and Amsterdam. Starting with immediate effect this agreement will enable KLM to offer their customers daily services between the Dutch capital and Malta. Air Malta’s flights to/from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport will connect with KLM’s extensive global network. The flights will be operated by the Maltese airline with Airbus A319/A320 aircraft. With this code-share agreement, the two airlines’ customers will benefit from new services, such as through check-in for passengers with connections. Commenting on this agreement Ursula Silling, Air Malta’s Chief Commercial Officer said: “This code-share agreement comes at a particular significant time for us when we are celebrating our 40 years of operations to Amsterdam

Air Malta Assists Hospice Malta Air Malta together with Sky Gourmet will be again assisting Hospice Malta in raising awareness of the Hospice’s aims and objectives amongst Air Malta’s customers. During the month of August, Air Malta’s cabin crew will be collecting donations on board the airline’s flights to help this organisation.

As a voluntary, non-profit organisation we depend on the support given by companies like Air Malta and the general public in order to keep on providing services to persons suffering from a number of end-of-life diseases”. Air Malta’s Chief Executive Philip Micallef said, “Air Malta is the only airline in Malta that provides continued support to voluntary and non-governmental organisations. I thank our cabin crew and the passengers for their support during this campaign.” Hospice Malta is a voluntary organisation inspired by Christian values. It was founded in 1989 and promotes and provides the highest standards of Palliative Care in a holistic manner for persons reaching end of life with cancer, motor neuron

disease, cardiac, respiratory and renal diseases. More than 7000 patients and their families benefitted from Hospice services. Presently Hospice receives an average of 60 new referrals each month. Visits to patients and families amount to around 7000 per year. Services provided by Hospice include home care, a day therapy unit, hydrotherapy, respite, patient transport, loan of specialised equipment, hospital support, a children’s summer programme for children of patients’ and main carers and bereavement support for relatives and significant others. All these services are provided free of charge to all patients. Funds are generated mostly through donations and on-going fund raising activities organised throughout the year. Annual events and fund raising initiatives include the Sunflower campaign, Figolli at Easter time, BBQ, Midnight Walk, Poinsettias and cards at Christmas time. Others include donations to Hospice instead of souvenirs for special occasions and activities organised by third parties for the benefit of Hospice.

How to support Hospice Malta: One can support Hospice by becoming a member, by participating in fundraising activities, by monetary donations and also by becoming a volunteer with Hospice. Members are kept informed of all activities to which they are invited to participate and give their support. Air Malta and Swiss Malta and Switzerland get closer and closer! The ongoing collaboration between Air Malta and Swiss International Air Lines grows further with a new code-share agreement. Passengers travelling between Malta and Zurich, and/or connecting via Zürich Airport now have the added benefit of choosing from a vast network of flights operated by Swiss. The very first Swiss flight LX 2596 flying ZRH-MLA and marketed by Air Malta as KM 2251 landed at Malta International Airport on 1st July 2015, followed by a welcoming ceremony. How long have you been working with Air Malta? When I joined Air Malta 20 years ago, I was one of the youngest stewardesses onboard. For my first flight, which was to Rome, I remember clearly the feeling of excitement combined with a little fear. Such feelings quickly transformed into enthusiasm and satisfaction. It's funny how time flies! However, I can gladly say that I am still proud to wear the Air Malta uniform after all these years. What three words describe your job best? ADVENTUROUS: Every flight is a journey and you never know what time you’ll be back home. CHALLENGING: Each individual flight is different and therefore one has to deal with every given situation in the best way possible. UNIQUE: This job is without comparison. One really has to love flying to be an efficient cabin crew. What is the biggest challenge when working with Air Malta? Being part of Cabin Crew is a challenge on its own! There are literally 101

challenges... for instance; working long hours, different shifts, missing family events and at times, it can leave me feeling very lonely too. Then there are the day-to-day events, such as having to deal with hectic schedules. I believe that due to the changes in the aviation industry post 9/11, not to mention the struggle with competition, the job just got tougher and tougher. Thankfully, I love challenges and this career suits my character very well. I enjoy staying fit and just being active and healthy overall. My favourite season is summer because I appreciate the outdoors and just adore the sun, sand and beach. It just makes me feel good! Do you have any hobbies? I have a passion for travelling and exploring new places and am always ready for an adventure. I have travelled extensively around new countries, particularly throughout Asia. I have visited Antigua, Cambodia, Cancun, Cuba, India, Laos, the Maldives, Mauritius, the Philippines, Punta Cana, St Lucia, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam, France, Ireland, Italy and

the United Kingdom. From all these places, I am particularly in love with Cambodia. My love for this beautiful country compelled me to adopt my lovely daughter, connecting me with this amazing place forever. Where are your favourite spots in Malta? Do you have any tips for anyone visiting our Islands? Personally, I feel privileged to be Maltese. Malta is a unique island with a vast history and unparalleled beauty, which I consider as being second to none. I definitely recommend Malta as a perfect holiday destination. One should visit the Maltese Islands not only for the good weather but also to see the amazing old houses, beautiful landscapes and the towering fortifications left by the Knights of St. John so many centuries ago. I also want to emphasise the friendly nature and hospitality of the locals. Some of my favourite spots include; the Blue Lagoon with its crystal clear waters; the majestic sight of Dingli Cliffs - particularly if viewed from a boat down below or on foot at the top; and the silent city of Mdina – which holds one of Europe’s finest examples of ancient medieval and baroque architecture.

A Royal love affair with Malta

T

he Maltese adventure began in 1949 when the Duke was appointed second-in-command of the destroyer H.M.S.Chequers, based in Malta, then a British colony.

When the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh fly into Malta in November it will be a homecoming of sorts. It was here that they spent the early years of their married life, and is the only country outside the United Kingdom they’ve ever called home.

Princess Elizabeth may have been destined to accede to the throne but in Malta she was able to live a fairly ordinary life, mixing with other naval officers’ wives, exploring bays, visiting local shops and enjoying dinner dances at the Phoenicia Hotel. The Princess would return home when Prince Philip was on naval manoeuvres but the couple’s adventure was extended when the Prince won promotion and took his first command, of the frigate H.M.S. Magpie, in late 1950. The failing health of the King meant the Princess had to leave to take over some of his duties in the summer of 1951, and the Prince took open-ended leave from the navy. 01

The purpose of the Queen’s visit in November is the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference. 53 leaders will join her. Once again the Duke will be at her side. And the Prince of Wales and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, will accompany her too. It’s not hard to guess the welcome the Royal party will get. It’s only a year since crowds gathered to cheer her grandson, Prince William. He visited last September to help celebrate Malta’s

50 years of independence, being a last minute replacement for his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, who was suffering from severe morning sickness when expecting Princess Charlotte. Prince William joked that Malta should be relieved that his son, Prince George, also stayed at home because of the damage the energetic one year old could have done. Given the long-standing relationship between the Royals and Malta it’s probably only a matter of time before George and Charlotte follow in the footsteps of their forefathers and discover Malta for themselves.

The Queen and the Commonwealth The Queen is Sovereign of 15 Commonwealth realms in addition to the UK. The Queen is also Head of the Commonwealth itself, an association of 53 independent countries. The Queen will preside at the 24th meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta in November.

Alcohol consumed at high altitude can have a stronger effect than usual. Cabin crew are legally empowered to refuse serving any alcohol to an intoxicated passenger and to anyone under the age of 18. In extreme cases, crew may also temporarily confiscate the passenger‘s own drinks so that the passenger would not become a nuisance to the other passengers and crew. Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. But once you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages in-flight goes against Air Malta policy.

Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the terminal building until you arrive to the terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) is also not allowed on board Air Malta flights. Similarly, the use of naked flames on and around the aircraft is also prohibited.

Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’1 capability, this shall be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself shall be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi shall be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.

Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting at an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I should inform the ca bin cr ew when …

… a passenger notices that his/her device is overheating. In such a case, the Personal Electronic Device must be switched off immediately and a member of the crew informed.
