Seedling
Cotyledons elliptical-linear, large, 30-40 x 4-5 mm, attenuated in the petiole, with visible midrib, glabrous. Opposite primordial leaves, linear-lanceolate, with a sinuate-dentate margin, teeth underlined as in adult leaves by a black tip, pubescent. The hypocotyl is well developed and greenish. The seedling is light green with an unpleasant odour.
Adult plant
Calendula arvensis is an upright or ascending annual plant with an unpleasant odour. Stem branched from the base, pubescent, reaching 40 cm in height. Lower leaves alternate, oblong-lanceolate, attenuated in the petiole, pubescent, glandular to the touch, only the midrib is clearly visible, sinuous margin, dentate from far, with teeth underlined by a black tip. Upper leaves amplexicaul, entire or slightly toothed. Flower heads solitary, 10-20 mm in diameter. Involucral bracts all the same size, lanceolate, linear and acute at the apex. Florets all ligulate, orange to pale yellow in colour. Fruit in achenes without pappus, of three types (heterocarpy): external arched and spiny, internal in ring striated externally or curved in the shape of nacelle.

Algeria: Calendula arvensis is a very common species in all types of annual and perennial crops in the country, as confirmed by the importance of its vernacular names. Being ubiquitous, it has a wide ecological range in relation to the physical and chemical nature of the soil. It develops in any type of crop as a result of careless weeding or incorrect chemical weeding.

Local harmfulness
Algeria: Calendula arvensis is a secondary "weed". It is ubiquitous but does not pose any particular problem in the current phytotechnical context. Due to its wide distribution, it is a species to be monitored in the event of changes in the context, such as a change in the cropping system, which could lead to a disruption in the inter-specific competition relationships.

Food: The fresh or dried petals of Calendula arvensis, once known as the "herb of all soups", are used to garnish omelettes, green salads, vegetables and sauces. The whole flowers can be used to flavour soups (cut off the more bitter peduncle) and to colour rice cooking water. The flower buds can be preserved in vinegar.
Medicinal: A medicinal plant rich in saponosides, with emmenagogic, antiseptic, stimulating and sudorific properties. Fresh leaves are recommended for wounds, corns and warts.
