Lampranthus aureus - Oranjesandvygie, Golden brightfig, Orange lampranthus
.
Common name: Oranjesandvygie, Golden brightfig, Orange lampranthus
Family: Aizoaceae (Vygie)
Distribution: Vredenburg to Saldanha
Habitat: Granite outcrops
National red list: Vulnerable
Life form: Succulent plant
Comments: This is a Cape endemic which occurs in a broad band along the southwestern coast of South Africa. It has a spectacular flower which has given it its species name - "aureus" - referring to the golden-orange colour. This species is sought after in the horticultural industry because of these striking flowers and consequently has been cultivated extensively for horticultural purposes. However, in the wild it has lost the majority of its habitat due to agricultural expansion in the area and only a handful of small, fragmented subpopulations can still be found on remnant fragments of natural habitat.
