Seventy-five pets have participated in the Luqa Primary School Animal Awareness Week.
Yesterday was the day for dogs, birds and turtles to go on display, although a tiny piglet, appropriately called Hanzir, definitely stole the show.
The pupils were also treated to a show by the Rottweilers Club Malta during which four young Rottweilers dutifully carried out their obedience drill.
Today the school will welcome different animals, namely goats, rabbits and cats.
Each pet is accompanied by its proud owner, one of 75 pupils from Year 1 to 6.
"The activity is aimed at promoting the love of animals among the children, as all classes are invited to attend the animal shows and drills being organised," explained Year 4 teacher Janice Chetcuti who organised the event with the support of headmistress Karmen Tedesco.
Teachers also created a host of in-class activities connected with the event, through a series of projects, posters and school tasks for the children.
The event will end on Sunday when the school is organising an open day and spring fair.
The school will open its doors to the general public and Luqa residents especially, in a bid to show the world how interesting life in a state-run primary school can be.
Apart from children and their pets, teachers and parents, football players and singers will also be present for the open day.
Stalls will be selling plants, books and food with proceeds being raised in aid of a dog sanctuary.
