Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Octavo 13 x 17 cm. Wrappers, 31 [1] pp. in Latvian language. The book is in good condition. Some minor stains and foxing, edges of the covers are worn. The book refers to the author's brightest creation period characterized by destroying traditional poetic structures and turning to free verse. He experimented with a number of rows, words, and lines of graphic layout, and manipulated placard slogans (obvious impact of Mayakovsky) terrorizing the reader with his fantastic sense of self-righteousness. The Semaphore collection s most important prose poem Par Dzeju (On Poetry) written in 1921 describes the "new" poetry, that should be created by poets deeply involved in political and social life. This idea became crucial not only for other futurists and modernist poets but also for the propagandists of proletarian literature in the Soviet Union. The Semaphore also carries out the vision written by Laicens in 1922 in Dzejas principi (Principles of Poetry) - a poetic manifesto, according to which the poetry should be an active fighter and life engine towards certain targets. The struggle for new content is inconceivable without the struggle for a new form corresponding to it. He urges reducing to the minimum the use of epithets, similes, and metaphors, simplifying poetical language towards colloquial simplicity, but without reducing poetic imagery. Poet and writer Linards Laicens (1883-1938) became the central figure of Latvian avant-garde. A participant in the Revolution of 1905 07, he suffered official repression. He was an important organizer of the legal worker's press and of revolutionary culture in bourgeois Latvia. Since 1920 member of the Latvian Parliament, and leader of the communist party. In 1932 he emigrated to the Soviet Union and engaged himself in the process of developing Soviet Latvian literature. During a wave of repression launched against the Latvian community in Russia in 1938, he was imprisoned and shot. Laicens s writings are imbued with the ideas of revolutionary struggle and hatred for capitalism. He was the editor of two cult leftist avant-garde journals Kreisa fronte (1928-1930) (Left Front) and Tribine (1931-1932) (Tribune).

Wrappers, 158 [2] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Book cover coated fine paper turned darker with time at edges, cover edges and spine ends show some fraying, light brown foxing spots on the cover, on the title and on first pages; internally text pages are clean. Great modernist cover design with archaic elements and 7 full-page modernist linocuts serving as chapter dividers by Niklavs Strunke. In present significant work author reveals a high concentration of thought, stylistic and figurative determination, entirely directed against bourgeois society. The text justifying revolutionary violence is a kind of document adopting with great artistic power the slogan "Viva Down" eliminating existing political order and with great fervor propagandizing social reforms. But writer's creation of this period in its content still remained somewhat spontaneous and anarchist expressing in the riot of personality who had been bullied and who in turn breaks the norms of bourgeois morality and law and rebells agains unequal world. Theme of organized struggle of the proletariat with the bourgeoisie will be raised in author's further works. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) is considered as central figure of the Latvian avant-garde, one of the most eminent personalities in Latvian modernist literature. Important organizer of the legal workers press and of revolutionary culture in bourgeois Latvia he edited cult leftist avant-garde journals Kreisa fronte (The Left Front) and Tribune (The Tribune). Laicens creativity imbued with the ideas of the revolutionary struggle and hatred of capitalism. Niklavs Strunke (1894 1966) versatile, prolific and outstanding artist, representative of radical phase in Latvian avant-garde. His art is known by a peculiar blend of Cubist and Constructivist influences with a distinct leaning towards the Italian trend of Pittura Metafisica (metaphysical art), unique in Latvian context.

Wrappers, 27 [4] pp. The book is in perfect condition, without any defects, losses, remarks and stains. Some uncut pages indicate that the book has never been read. Present cycle of poems by Linards Laicens is considered as one of the best books of love lyrics in Latvian literature. It is stand-alone work in author's leftist propaganda literary creation. Verses full of Eastern exotic dedicated to Anna Lacis, Latvian actress, who lived with poet before her arresting for left-wing underground organizations participance. In Ho-Tai author successfully applied forms borrowed from Chinese poetry. Here he began experiments with free verse. Modernist Chinese-style graphical cover design created by leading Latvian artist Niklavs Strunke. Book was re-edited several times (1968, 1983). Present copy is rare first edition in excellent condition. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) was Latvian leading leftist avant-garde writer and poet. He took part in the revolution of 1905 and supported the idea of independence, but in 1920 he became a communist, moving to the Soviet Union in 1932. Six years later he fell victim to the purge of 1938 and was imprisoned and shot. In literary works Laicens defends the idea of "new" art that will sweep away the old one - an idea that was crucial not only for futurists and other modernists poets but also for the propagandists of proletarian literature in the Soviet Union.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Quarto 23.3x15.2 cm., wrappers, 1928-1930, 18 numbers (all published). Cover designs by Ernests Kalis. A bimonthly journal, considered to be one of Laicens' most important publications and the most significant journal of the era along with SIGNALS but esteemed to be of higher literary quality and thought. Striking abstract linocut covers, highly original, in bright colors unique for each issue. As with almost all of the liberal to left wing culture in Latvia, there is a strongly Soviet orientation, and the journal was most likely financed, at the outset, with funds from the USSR. Every issue is illustrated, including some photomontage and graphics. In addition to being a vehicle of contrarian social commentary and promoting open discourse, KREISA FRONTE also was a publishing house which issued poetry and literary books. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) was highly individual, prolific writer in all literary forms, editor and publisher, going against all currents of the day, leftist and of increasingly Marxist-Leninist persuasion. Somewhat the ingenue in matters of Soviet power, he emigrated to the USSR where he became a victim of the purges in Moscow in 1938 along with fellow Latvians. KREISA FRONTEwas published from 1928-1930. There are no library holdings of this most important journal outside of Latvia. The present set is clothbound, preserving original wrappers.
