Book cover shows edge wear and creasing across corners, missing pieces or torn corners of front cover and missing pieces of upper edge of back cover are repaired (pasted on the inner side with paper), but still looks like very well preserved and clean copy. Constructivist book cover design by author. Present stories collection was born as a result of writer's trip to Western Europe in 1925. The book is sharply opposed to everything that has been written about this country before by "bourgeois" writers. In eight vivid stories with great creative force described hard labour of Italian workers, showed real Italy without idyll. Great author's expressionism entirely directed against bourgeois society. Linards Laicens (1883-1938) is considered as central figure of the Latvian left avant-garde, outstanding revolutionary writer, one of the most eminent personalities in Latvian modernist literature. He was a true son of his country, an active fighter for socialism who devoted his life to pursuing these ideals. The revolutionary struggle has became not only the meaning of his life but also sense of creativity. He wrote about sixty short stories, four novels, several collections of poetry.
