Friends and family are mourning the loss of Joe Dentici, the second-generation owner of Kuhn's Family Markets who died Saturday night.

Dentici was surrounded by family when he died.

He took over from his father Frank Dentici after the family decided to sell their own store on Perrysville Avenue and buy the Kuhn's Family Markets chain.

His son, also Frank, explained on the Kuhn's Cooking Hour that there was a very good reason why they kept that name.

“They ended up selling Frank’s Market and they bought Kuhn’s Market up on Perrysville Avenue,” said Dentici. “People ask why they didn’t change the name, they didn’t have the money. They put all the money into buying the business out, buying the store, but they didn’t have the money to change the name . . . we’ll just leave the name the same people know what it is.”

Dentici appeared weekly on KDKA Radio for more than 20 years.

KDKA Radio's Rob Pratte says Dentici was battling cancer.

Kuhn's operates eight locations around the Pittsburgh area.
