Foliage: alternate, simple, and 4 to 9 inches wide

very big and coarse

coarsely serrate with 3 lobes; pubescent on veins under leaf
Flower: monoceious
Fruit: syncarp of achenes in the Fall borne in 1's, 2's or sometimes 3's

1 inch in diameter
Bark: exfoliating olive-green to creamy white

compared to P. occidentalis, bark is smoother and more exfoliating

Care  
   
Maintenance: do not use in a monoculture
Pests & Pathology: more resistant to anthracnose than P. occidentalis, but other diseases (canker, powdery mildew) and insects can cause problems

‘Bloodgood' is a popular cultivar that is thought to have greater anthracnose resistance
   
Additional Notes: considered a fast-growing species
