This auction is for 5, 10, 15 or 20 seeds, home grown in an organic fashion in Manchester, UK of this fully hardy deciduous tree, pruned shrub, fruiting hedge or bonsai, native to Eurasia. Often thought to be a hybrid of Prunus spinosa, Sloe and Prunus cerasifera, Cherry Plum, it may in fact be a selected form of Prunus spinosa.
It is a great small vigorous spreading small deciduous fruit tree or large shrub. Ideal as an individual specimen tree, pruned hedging or grown as a bonsai. It does well in on moist, well drained soils in full sun/semi-shade, but is quite tolerant of other soil types, sites and moisture. It grows to around 2.5 - 4m high and across. It is somewhat thorny and has ovate green leaves with a serrated margin. The leaves turn a lovely yellow and orange colour in autumn. Masses of White hermaphroditic flowers are produced in spring, followed by dark blue/purple Damsons which ripen in August. Delicious eaten raw but are commonly used in preserves, syrup, wine and favouring gin, vodka or other spirits. Great for birds and pollinators!
