Overview
Lampranthus spectabilis or the Trailing Ice Plant is a succulent groundcover with fleshy leaves of a dark grey/green colour and splendidly vibrant "daisy shaped" flowers made up of fine, delicate petals.
You'll sometimes see lampranthus on sand dunes, where they spread large distances and can become straggly.
These plants are best suited to hot and dry climates and Mediterranean style gardens with dry summers and wet winters.
Soil: Well drained soils - will bear very dry conditions as they store moisture in their fleshy leaves
Maintenance: Need very little maintenance - can even be left unwatered in a hot, dry summer.
Lampranthus can be easily propogated from stem cuttings in spring.
Diseases: Mealy bugs and scales
Other Species: 180 species including L. aurantiacus which is orange and L. coccineus which is red.
Comments: This plant is often mistakenly classified as a Mesembryanthemum - which means "Midday Flower". Try sprinkling them with water and see how quickly they close up - these are definitely sun babies.
