Anyone with a bug for travel may well have visited – or simply read up about – Malta’s famous Azure Window rock arch, which was formed millions of years ago by two limestone caves collapsing in to each other.

But sad news has emerged today after heavy storms caused the 50 metre high arch to crumble in to the sea.

In 2013, geological experts predicted erosion would cause the arch to disappear, however that wasn’t expected to happen quite so soon.

Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat took to Twitter to share his sadness about the natural incident occurring.

He shared an image of the landscape without the Azure Window.

The rock has been admired by tourists for years, and has even starred as a backdrop in various films and on the hit series Game Of Thrones, making it especially sad that it’s no longer there to be admired.

However – all is not lost just yet…

Speaking to Sky News, Prime Minister Muscat said an ‘international initiative’ will see ‘what the future holds.’

When asked if a rebuild will happen, Muscat did not rule out the option, saying: ‘I'm not saying necessarily that.’

Let’s hope something can be done to restore the natural landmark to its former brilliance.
