The Spotted Bass is nearly identical to its more common relative, the Largemouth Bass, differing only in small physical characteristics and habitat. They tend to be found in areas with more current than the Largemouth Bass, and inhabit areas that are too warm and turbid for Smallmouth Bass. Spotted Bass also do not typically grow as large as the Largemouth Bass - maximum size in Texas rarely exceeds five pounds. The jaw length on a Spotted Bass does not extend past the eyeline, have dark spots towards their bellies, the cheek scales are smaller compared to a Largemouth, the dorsal fin is connected while a Largemouth has a separate or nearly separate dorsal fin, and Spotteds have a dark spotted lateral line which Largemouth lacks.
