Watch: The eagle soars over Valletta, Zaren Bonnici ‘Tal-Ajkla’ criticizes PL, PN and AD

Mathias Mallia Sunday, 24 April 2016, 10:14 Last update: about 9 years ago

Zaren Bonnici, 'Tal-Ajkla' this morning organized a 'mass' meeting to speak his mind about the current political situation in Malta in Valletta.

Mr Bonnici, 58, from Zejtun first sprung onto the political scene in 2003, where he got 20 votes. His second time contesting the general election in 2013 garnered him a viral following with hundreds, if not thousands flocking to his mass meetings to hear his impassioned speeches, chanting his poetic tribute to the eagle. In the last election, he garnered 70 votes.

It was unclear whether an upside-down EU flag used by Zaren was an act of protest or negligence.

Zaren prefaced the meeting by saying that the reason why he is doing his first meeting after three years because only now can the country see that both sides of parliament are lying to the public. He said that politicians are "wasting time in parliament", also criticising AD saying that he got more votes in the MEP elections than Carmel Cacopardo. He then sang his famous anthem to the audience claiming that there is no political party in Malta that can have an anthem like this. The chorus goes, "you can't do anything with Zaren 'Tal-Ajkla'" ("Ma taghmlu xejn ma' Zaren Tal-Ajkla"). While only a handful of people actually stood and listened to Zaren, he certainly got some passing trade as people walked through the sleepy capital and he also provided some entertainment to those who were sipping coffees at nearby cafeterias.

Zaren wished Dr Beppe Fenech Adami a speedy recovery to kick off before pointing out that it is useless for the political television and radio programmes to sling mud at each other because we are all Maltese.

That being said, he followed by attacking Opposition Leader Dr Simon Busuttil by saying that he cannot say anything about "mafia" and that he should be ashamed. If PL has people to sack, so does the PN. If Dr Mario de Marco needs to be removed, then action should be taken.

"How can they organize protests against corruption after 25 years of silence?"

Zaren said that he is not a PL supporter, but he cannot bring himself to say that the Prime Minister, Dr Joseph Muscat, has never done anything right.

The PBS should also be ashamed for never inviting Mr Bonnici on Xarabank. Focusing on host, Peppi Azzopardi, he said that he will never forget that 'Tal-Ajkla' was never given the exposure it deserves.

Zaren went on to give advice to the Prime Minister saying that he should meet the youth whom he took for a ride during throughout the last electoral campaign.

The story of the PN according to the Tal-Ajkla leader went through former minister Dr Austin Gatt, saying that he laughed and shouted his way through his time in government. He then turned on former PN MP Dr Franco Debono claiming that he doesn't have the courage to join any political party.

"I managed to keep my calm in 2013, and I will keep my calm now too. Not like them, fighting in Parliament."

The PN should have given their marathon money to Puttinu, rather than keeping the money for themselves. Now all the people can here is a chant of "Panama! Panama!" in the media, Zaren said.

Criticizing the PN media, Zaren said that NET TV and Radio 101 are "afraid" of him. "If they have to invite everyone, then they need to invite the independent politicians. I will speak about everything, I will not cut corners and I will speak about both PN and PL."

"The Prime Minister's wife has more power than the Prime Minister," Zaren said as he jumped from one issue to another in near incoherent shouting, contrary to his earlier comment about keeping calm.

The government should be ashamed about the power station deadlines not coming close to being met as was initially projected. "It is impossible to build a power station in a year and a half."

Zaren then showed his support to Salvu Mallia wishing him luck in possibly joining Independent MP, Marlene Farrugia, in her plans to start a new political party, however Zaren expressed his reservations saying he wasn't sure how successful the venture could possibly be.

Turning his attention back to Dr Busuttil, Zaren said that the opposition leader has no chance of being able to lead the country. "You are not good enough to lead the country, not like your predecessor Lawrence Gonzi."

"Those two women are liars" Zaren said about the two independent MPs, Marlene Farrugia and Giovanna Debono for voting with the PN in the last motion of no confidence in government earlier this month.

Mr Bonnici went on to praise the government for their childcare schemes allowing both parents to work while their children are taken care of in childcare centres. "Something that the PN never came up with in 25 years."

The new parliament building was also criticized as a waste of time and money which looks more like a coffin than a parliament building. "Why did the Maltese people need this?"

"I will be contesting the second and third districts. Do not vote for PL or PN."

He said that it is impossible in 5 years to do more than what the PN did in 25 years, stating that he had never heard of a government in power for that long.

"I will open up your eyes. I am not like the other parties. There needs to be a third party, but it can't happen because the media do not invite anyone except for the PN and the PL. This is why I appeal to the media to invite me to be the voice of the public."

He said that it is not fair that all independent candidates are only given a small chance prior to general elections, but they deserve to be given a platform at all times. Appealing to the public, Zaren asked for a resistance against the big media houses until they give a voice to the smaller politicians.

"With 'Tal-Ajkla' in government, everyone will be held accountable for their assets," the independent candidate said going back to his point at the beginning of the meeting about the parties refusing to sack their members after they were proven to be lacking political integrity.

"Just because people didn't vote for me, I wasn't upset." Zaren said, reasoning that he can't be upset because "the eagle keeps rising and rising and rising, making friends with everyone." He said he wishes that he could contest all over Malta, but unfortunately he is limited to only two districts. "Anyone who doesn't want to vote for PL or PN has one thing to do to possibly try to clean up parliament. All you have to do is vote for "Tal-Ajkla'."
