Boarfish caught in Irish waters -- usually used for fishmeal -- will now be exported to China after it caught the attention of buyers in the Chinese market earlier this year.

This development took place during Irish minister Simon Coveney’s agri-fisheries trade mission to China in April this year.

The Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney, TD today welcomed the announcement made by the Chinese authorities via the Irish Embassy in Beijing, that commercial exports of Boarfish from Ireland may now be imported to China.

"China is a key strategic trade partner for Ireland and has a strong demand for imports of high quality seafood, given the size of its population," Coveney said.

"Ireland is well placed to be a key supplier of seafood, meats, dairy products and beverages as well as other products and services to China.
