Bay Pipefish, Syngnathus leptorhynchus

These photos were taken in late May of 2020 while snorkeling in the shallows of Peter Cove, Pender Island — a rare treat to see several Bay Pipefish, Syngnathus leptorhynchus engaging in a mating dance.  At one point, a male and female pipefish exchange eggs– the male being the one who will carry the embryos and release tiny, fully formed pipefish at birth.
