Bermuda Junior Society Mission:
To empower young leaders to drive meaningful connections and foster collaboration between the United Kingdom and Bermuda. We aim to create a vibrant network of professionals and emerging talents across diverse industries, facilitating knowledge sharing, mentorship, and career development opportunities. We’re committed to positively impacting Bermuda’s wider community by supporting initiatives in the environment, science, education, culture, and tourism sectors, contributing to sustainable growth and well-being.
Highlights from the Event:
Our speaker, Bermudian Mark Lomas, Chartered FCIPD, Head of Culture at LLOYDS, delivered an outstanding presentation covering a range of topics:
• The principles of strengths-based recruitment.
• The mechanisms of competency-based selection.
• Crafting effective CVs tailored for the UK market, providing tips on how to stand out.
• The significant impact of volunteering on professional and personal development.
• The critical role of mentors in guiding and shaping careers.
• Strategies to maintain self-confidence and overcome bias by showcasing competence.
A standout message for me was his point about the importance of networking: “Your network is your net worth.” He stressed that no matter how talented one might be, success is rarely achieved in isolation. Building a strong, supportive network can accelerate professional growth.
Additionally, he emphasised the power of persistence—how “Persistence overcomes resistance”! 💥
Ywione Darrell and Angel Seaman from Longtail Learning Bermuda also made an excellent presentation, sharing the exceptional work their organisation is doing for Bermudian students. They passionately discussed their efforts to support students through tutoring, mentoring, and scholarship application assistance, all provided free of charge. Their dedication is commendable and a beacon of hope for the future of young Bermudians.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to all the young professionals and students who attended today's event, as well as to our speaker. Your presence and participation left an impact. I eagerly anticipate our next event and the opportunity to strengthen the Junior Society further.
A special thank you goes to The Government of Bermuda London Office for sponsoring our first event and showing your continued support for Bermuda’s young people!
Also, a special thanks to the Bermuda Society’s Board of Governors for their invaluable guidance and support!
