Upstate New York's best farmers markets by region

Each summer and fall, nearly 700 farmers markets are open for business in communities across New York state, more than two-thirds of them in Upstate NY. And more are open year-round - there were 120 winter markets operating in the 2014-2015 season, up from 40 just seven years ago.

Farmers markets feature locally sourced food and other products. Some are big operations, others run on shoestring budgets.

Markets to check out by region

Adirondack

Farmers Markets can be a challenge for short-season growing seasons. The weekly Sunday market in Keene Valley specializes in fine crafts in addition to fresh produce. It's worth a stop if you're a summer resident or traveling through the region.

Capital Region

Lots of farmers markets are big, but if you want to visit one that has a small town, neighborhood feel to it stop by the Delmar Farmers Market, staged 2:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays in the parking lot at the First United Methodist Church, 428 Kenwood Ave., Delmar.

Catskills

The Callicoon Farmers' Market is Sullivan County's largest year-round producer and artisan market. It's located in the southern end of the Catskill region. It features seasonal produce and a wide variety of other products, ranging from trout to wild mushrooms. Vendors sell local honey, wines and pasta.

Central New York

The Regional Market on Syracuse's North Side is one of the oldest farmers markets in the state and one of the largest. It is a weekend morning ritual for countless CNY consumers. The market is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays year round and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays from May to November. The Sunday flea market is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. year round.

Finger Lakes

The travel site Orbitz recently included Rochester's Public Market on its list of "Six Farmers Markets worth checking out right now." It's huge, with 300 some vendors signed up. It's open all year three days a week - 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

Leatherstocking

The Whitesboro Farmers Market is relatively new and was launched to not only provide local food for residents, but to show off the beauty of the village. The market, located in the Village Green, corner of Main and Clinton streets, begins June 1. It is open 3 to 7 p.m. each Monday through the fall.

North Country

The Potsdam Farmers Market features naturally raised meat and locally grown vegetables, herbs, berries, and fruits. It takes place in Ives Park, behind the municipal lot on Main Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays May through October. In July, August and September, the market is also open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Southern Tier

The Otsiningo Farmers Market has the largest selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods, locally raised meats and eggs, and many handmade products. It is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays from May 2 to the end of October.

Western New York

The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market in Buffalo bills itself as a "family friendly" market. It is open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays from mid-May through the end of November. It's is a producer-only market, which means products offered for sale are the creation of the vendor -- there is no reselling allowed.
