About The Artwork
When I visited the island of sunshine in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta's nature surprised me. Particularly this legendary gate made of very light stone has a mesmerising effect and shows the character of the island: proud, heroic but also warm, playful and happy to be alive. I made many sketches on the windy coast and took many pictures. It was impossible to hold a big canvas against the wind on location but to show the majesty of this place it needed a crucial size. So back in my studio I stretched a 120 x 120 cm canvas. Just a few months after I finished painting, I learned that a big storm destroyed this rock formation! This painting might be the last serious work capturing this beautiful and majestic part of this island.
