Etymology

Bangana: from the Bengali vernacular banggana, used in reference to “most species” of Mugil (Mugilidae) and certain cyprinids, all of which possess an “elevated longitudinal ridge on the middle of the lower jaw”.

devdevi: in honour of Dev Dev Mukerji, Technical Assistant, Zoological Survey of India, who first noted that this species was distinct from B. dero.

Order: Cypriniformes Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution

Known with certainty from the Irrawaddy River system in Manipur state, India, and Myanmar, and the Salween watershed in eastern Myanmar and northwestern Thailand. Records from the Red River basin in Vietnam appear questionable.

Type locality is ‘Burma: Myitkyina District: Mali Hka basin: Phungin Hka;’.

Habitat

Presumably inhabits flowing river channels and larger tributaries and is migratory on a seasonal basis, as in related species.

Maximum Standard Length

200 – 250 mm.
