“Failing to properly bind your postpartum belly may dramatically impact your recovery and negatively affect daily activities.”

After carrying around your baby in your uterus for nine long months, you've finally given birth to your bundle of joy. You're feeling euphoric and ecstatic with the arrival of the newest addition to the family, but you soon realise that your belly isn't how it used to be anymore.

This is where the importance of proper postpartum binding comes in. This phase of recovery is extremely crucial and it's a "make or break.” Failing to properly bind your postpartum belly can dramatically impact your recovery and negatively affect daily activities.

After delivery (Fig. A), your uterus remained in an expanded condition and is hollow. Hence, the bloated look of your belly even after delivery. The position of various visceral organs are also different compared to pre-pregnancy.

Unlike conventional binding which only covers the belly section, our methodical binding techniques start all the way from the pelvic door and up until the base of the rib cage. This is to ensure that the uterus and other organs are "pushed up" to their original positions.

As the uterus deflates over time (Fig. B & C), the belly will look significantly flatter and the visceral organs are a step closer to its original position at the end of our treatment. Individual results may vary.

As with any recovery process with the human body, ample time is needed. Many mummies without post treatment follow ups complained that their belly and uterus immediately start to sag.

Here at Shasha and Dian Postnatal Massage, we provide Velcro binds and binding guidelines to follow for your post-massage treatment, ensuring that the uterus will be fully deflated and give other visceral organs time to permanently sit in their original positions. Continuation of the binding will also help with the rehabilitation process of diastasis recti (abdominal wall separation). If left untreated, this can negatively impact daily activities.

With the correct postpartum binding and follow up treatments, you will be on your way to a full recovery and a flatter looking tummy.

Love,
Shasha & Dian
