Description

Let's face it, French literacy blocks can be a pain to plan for. If you do shared reading or French literacy centres, there's a LOT of prep that goes into it. This French book companion for the story "Gaston Grognon" (Grumpy Monkey) By Suzanne Lang will help you plan an entire interactive read-aloud and purposeful literacy lesson for an entire week, that will discuss taking risks in order to grow and live a more fulfilling life!

Gaston Grognon tells the story of a grumpy monkey who wakes up one morning and has a negative attitude about everything. None of his friends can figure out why he is feeling this way, and neither can he. The story shares the relatable tale of not always feeling 100% and that's okay. This is an amazing French social-emotional learning activity to discuss feelings with your students.

Please note: this is a French book companion for the story Gaston Grognon by Suzanne Lang. This resource is to be used alongside the book and does not replace the need to purchase your own copy of it.

INCLUDED IN THIS FRENCH READ ALOUD:

  • Curricular Connections & Learning Objectives (Ontario)

  • Bilingual Interactive Sticky Notes: To use as discussion prompts with questions that go along with the story! Simply print, cut them out and tape them to the corresponding pages of the story so that they're ready to go each year! You can also use a paperclip if you don't want to damage a rented copy. Great for sub plans!

  • 5W Retelling Poster: A retelling poster included in colour and black/white specifically made for this french read-aloud.

  • 8 Vocabulary Cards: To review some sight words or relevant vocabulary from the story. Can be used pre, during and post-shared-reading!

  • French Story Sequencing Cards: Pocket Chart (or chart paper) sequencing cards to use in whole-groups or small-groups when retelling this specific story. Very helpful to have visual reminders when retelling the story. Students can orally explain the beginning, middle and end by using the sequence cards.

  • One-page retell flip book: A printable one-page flipbook, great for limiting photocopies and simplifying the retell process amongst primary students. Students will briefly summarize the characters, setting, problem, solution, beginning, middle, and end of the story.

  • Differentiated French Worksheets: Choose which pages you want to use according to your student's skill levels. Great for post-reading to check for understanding or to work on reading strategies. Lots of opportunities for differentiation.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

My French book companion products are perfect for students in French Immersion or Core French classrooms. They make for great sub plans or substitute lessons as they are NO PREP and easy to implement. They are also amazing for planning out your reading block for an ENTIRE WEEK. There is just so much included, that you can (and are encouraged to) revisit the book every day and work on the various activities throughout a week of French reading centres and instruction.

Interactive read-alouds should be harder in difficulty than where students are reading independently, as the scaffolding and whole-group extensions allow students to dive deeper into their own understanding!
