Description
Juglans regia is valued for its fruit and for its wood used in carpentry, hence acquiring the name ‘regia’, meaning royal. Juglans regia trees release colourants that inhibit the growth of other plants around them.
The green husks and fresh leaves have been used for centuries as a brown dye.
Flowers
The male flowers are cylindrical drooping catkins, the female flowers are small, in groups of 1-5, round with curled edges.
Leaves
Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. Rows of 7-9 leaflets on either side of the stem, oval, 5-12.5 cm.
Fruits Seeds
Drupe: outer fleshy parts surrounds a shell/pit with a seed inside, round and smooth.
Edible
Nut: eaten as a fruit or in the form of cold pressed walnut oil.
Medical
Nut: contains minerals and Omega 3 fatty acids, found in the bitter pith surrounding the nut.
Leaves: in herbal medicine the leaves are used to treat eruptive skin conditions.
